The timing advance unit or avancer on an Isuzu diesel pump is a precision hydraulic component in the fuel injection system. This unit uses internal oil pressure to advance the fuel injection timing as engine speed increases. At idle speeds of approximately 700 to 800 RPM, the avancer remains at zero degrees of advance. As engine speed rises to 2000 to 3000 RPM, this unit advances timing by 8 to 12 degrees. The avancer housing is made from ductile cast iron with heat treatment while the internal piston uses hardened steel reaching 55 HRC. Proper avancer operation reduces fuel consumption by up to 10 percent and increases engine torque at higher RPM ranges. Common failure symptoms include black smoke under acceleration and a noticeable lack of power above 2500 RPM.

The diesel fuel cooler or return fuel cooler is a small heat exchanger installed in the fuel return line from injectors to the tank. Return fuel from injectors reaches temperatures of 60 to 80 degrees Celsius and will raise tank fuel temperature without cooling. Fuel temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius reduce viscosity, causing poor pump lubrication and lower engine power output. This component reduces fuel temperature by up to 20 degrees Celsius using either airflow or contact with engine coolant. In Isuzu engines with codes 4JH1-TC and 4JG2-TC, the fuel cooler is installed as standard equipment. Signs of fuel cooler failure include fuel vapor in the tank, hard cold starts in hot weather, and power loss above 3000 RPM.
