A hydraulic proportional valve controls oil flow proportionally to an electrical input signal. In no-load condition, the valve is closed and no flow occurs. Increasing the input signal 0–10V or 4–20mA opens internal paths, increasing oil flow to the output port. The valve consists of a movable spool and an electromagnetic coil. Spool movement changes the cross-sectional area of flow paths. Return flow to the tank is controlled via the T port to maintain system pressure. The flow diagram usually shows P pressure, A and B output, and T return ports with flow direction and spool position.
